I just got my camera—a 50mm 1.8—and now it’s time to shoot! If you’re new to event photography, don’t worry—I’m here to help. My name is Shaq, and I’ve covered over 200 photoshoots as a full-time photographer for the past three years.
When I first picked up my camera, it was just a hobby. I loved providing photography services for my friends, family, and those close to me. Over time, I turned my passion into a profession. If you're just starting out, here are some essential tips to help you navigate event photography like a pro.

Before You Go: Preparation is Key
1. Be Prepared Make sure everything is charged, packed, and ready to go. Check your SD cards to ensure you have enough space. I’m forgetful, so I always double-check my gear before leaving. There’s nothing worse than arriving at a shoot and realizing you left your batteries at home.
2. Any Camera Works Don’t feel like you need the latest and greatest gear to take great photos. Even at professional shoots, I sometimes use my iPhone to capture quick moments. The advanced lighting features, video capabilities, and ultra-wide mode can be valuable tools when you need to be quick and mobile.
3. Think Before You Splurge Camera equipment can be expensive, but before you spend big, ask yourself if it’s necessary. A camera is an investment—if you care about quality and longevity, a well-chosen camera can serve you for years.
At the Event: Capturing the Story
4. Rethink the Shot List While a shot list can be useful, I personally don’t rely on one. Instead, I focus on storytelling—capturing moments that create a feeling of FOMO for those who weren’t there or reflecting the true vibe of the event. Look for candid interactions, emotions, and key moments that bring the event to life.
5. Editing on the Fly Sometimes, editing is a game-time decision. VSCO is a great free app for quick edits (not sponsored), allowing you to enhance your images on the go. Don’t stress over perfection—aim to highlight the best aspects of your shots.

Mastering Event Photography:
Don’t be afraid to use auto mode. Some photographers frown upon it, but in fast-paced environments, it can be a lifesaver.
You can also switch your camera to aperture priority mode (AV) and set your ISO to auto for more control over exposure.
Consider lighting before color theory. Understanding how light affects your subject will improve your photography instantly.
Understanding the Exposure Triangle
Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together to create a perfectly exposed photo. This relationship is known as the exposure triangle:
Aperture (f-stop) controls how much light enters the camera and affects depth of field.
Shutter Speed determines how long the sensor is exposed to light, impacting motion blur.
ISO adjusts the camera’s sensitivity to light, helping in low-light conditions but introducing noise at higher values.
Balancing these three elements is key to capturing well-exposed images in any setting.
Final Thoughts
Mastering Event photography is about more than just taking pictures—it’s about capturing energy, emotion, and moments that matter. With the right preparation and mindset, you can create stunning event photography that resonates with your audience.
Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, these tips will help you navigate the world of event photography with confidence. Happy shooting! Shaq Shaq J Photo
